Finishing October
10/30 & 10/31
And just like that October is over. The final few days of the month consisted of a Ghost City Tour, Auspicious Baking Company, and of course Halloween.
I love Savannah, really love it here. It is impossible to become jaded to the beauty of this city. The oak trees dripping in Spanish moss, the downtown cobblestone streets, the coastal marsh views, the bright warm sun. It is a romantic city filled with history. As much as I love New York, I am happy to settle in here, make this place my home. After this month and scoping the local business scene I truly have only seen the tip of the iceberg. Stay tuned for the next post: top ten coffee shops of Savannah. But I will also be heading to and writing about the Mercer House, the Telfair Museum, all the park squares, and I am even thinking of doing a sober food and drink crawl. Possibilities are limitless.
Friday night, date night, 10/30 Leo and I booked a 90 minute outdoor walking ghost tour around the city. Savannahians very commonly say it is “a city built on its dead” and seriously, it is. I am not sure how much I believe in ghosts and hauntings but if you do apparently this is the place to be. Not only is the city is built over 100s of graves but has become famous for places like Marshall House hotel (a now haunted hotel used as a hospital during the yellow fever epidemic), Bonaventure Cemetery (ever read Midnight In The Garden Of Good & Evil?), Colonial Park cemetery (a revolutionary war graveyard right in the center of town), and so many more. Check out this link for 11 haunted places in Sav.
The tour was fun! Like I said, I am not sure how much I believe the reactions to the ghosts stories, but the history to these historic homes from the 1700 and 1800s are fascinating. Savannah has seen a lot of tragedy; yellow fever, war, slavery, hunger and natural disasters. The death and destruction are engrained into this city and its people just as much as its charm and beauty. The ghost tour is a reminder of that.
Last but certainly not least this AMAZING bakery over in Sandfly, GA. Auspicious Baking Company is a 10 minute ride out of the downtown area that is open Friday through Sunday 8-3. Halloween morning Leo and I started with a spin class at Cyclebar. I cant even talk about it without first showing you some pictures of their pastries and breads.
Who doesn’t want a homemade toaster pastry? Like come on! Talk about an artisanal place. You can tell the intense thought and care went into these recipes and preparation. Top notch. We had an everything bagel croissant with cream cheese filling, an almond honey croissant, and cheese danish. 10/10. Already planning on going back next weekend.
And that is a wrap! For this first blog post at least. I am not looking to get on my soapbox and give a speech but local businesses need our support more than ever. Our neighbors, teachers, coaches, instructors, friends, and family need you to invest in them. Our communities depend on it. I have seen more small business close in the past six months than I can recall in my recent memory. Even myself, starting and running a small business, find myself going through ebbs and flows trying to keep my head above water. I am not saying you shouldn’t shop on Amazon or nly get your produce at a farmers market, but if you can support a local business in some way I invite you to do so. Maybe their their posts on social media, buy gifftcards to their establishments, do some holiday shopping at the local boutiques, buy your coffee from a small shop rather than a chain.
Every little bit counts.
XO,
Dominique
